Overview

The School of Political Science and Public Administration of China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL) can be traced back to the Department of Politics which was founded in 1985, offering Politics major and Education major at that time, and hosted the early-generation scholars including DU Ruji, YUN Guang and XU Liming. In 1988, the Department of Politics changed its name into the Department of Politics and Management. In November 1999, under the reform of upgrading departments into schools, the School of Politics and Management was established. It set up three undergraduate majors -- Politics, Public Administration and Business Administration -- and a division of Fundamental Theories of Marxism and Leninism. It also defined the school motto and teaching philosophy to be “pragmatism, self- improvement, inclusiveness and innovation.” In June 2002, when CUPL re-organized its old academic establishments into 12 teaching units, the School of Political Science and Public Administration was established and it began to offer four undergraduate majors, namely, Politics and Administration, International Politics, Administrative Management, and Public Affairs Management.

The school confers doctorate degrees in Disciplines of Politics and Administrative Management, offering 7 doctoral majors and 11 master majors (including MPA). It owns a Politics post-doctorate rotating station. Politics as Level One Discipline, Political Theory, and China & Foreign Political Institutions as Level Two Discipline, have all been listed as Beijing Municipality Key Disciplines. The major of Politics and Administration has been listed as a State-Level Featured Major. The faculty teaching Fundamental Courses of Politics have won the title of State-Level Teaching Excellency Team. The course of History of Western Political Thoughts has been awarded as State-Level Quality Course and State-Level Quality Shared-Resource Course. The course of European Union Politics and Policy is a State-level Bilingual Model Course. Besides, the School has produced and maintained three Beijing Municipality Teaching Excellency Teams.

Currently the School is composed of the Faculty of Politics, the Faculty of Administrative Management, the Faculty of Public Affairs Management, and the Faculty of International Politics. There are 81 employees among whom 65 are full- time faculty members, 24 are professors, 23 are associate professors, and 17 are doctoral supervisors.

Over the past 30 years, the School has established a rather complete system of disciplines and majors focusing on political theory, China & foreign political institutions and public affairs governance. It has become an important base of scientific research, talents training, international exchanges and social services in areas of politics and public administration.
